MCF Arbiter's Seminar - 16th to 18th September

Have you ever wondered:
• What is the correct way to record your moves on the score sheets?
• Is saying “Check” compulsory?
• What happens if your opponent makes an illegal move?
• Is touch move really touch move? What if I touch my opponent’s piece?
• If I am left handed and I have been assigned to play the black pieces, can I put the clock on my left?
• Can I use both hands to play chess?
• In Swiss pairing system, why some players play alternate colors while some play same color twice?
• I have been paired to play black 3 times in a row. Is this possible?
• I share the same points with another player but why is he declared the champion?
• I was assigned to play white but I played black. What will happen to me in the next round?

These are common wonders asked by many players, parents and teachers who are involved in chess tournaments. And these are the questions that will be answered and explained when you attend the MCF Arbiter’s Seminar starting from 16th September to 18th September (Malaysia Day holiday weekend) at the Dato’ Arthur Tan Chess Center (DATCC) in Kuala Lumpur.

Participants for the seminar will be taught the FIDE Laws of Chess, Swiss Pairing Regulations and other interesting tips in organizing and managing chess events and tournaments. Participants will also be tested on what they have learned and those who did well in the exams will be given a Certificate of Achievement by the Malaysia Chess Federation and recognized as an able Arbiter to conduct local chess events and tournaments.

The entry fees for the seminar is RM200 which includes MCF Certification fees and training manuals (NOTE: Participant are responsible for their own meal and accommodations).

An optional 1-day training program is also scheduled on 19th September (Monday) for those who are interested to learn more about the Swiss Manager Pairing Program. During this training session, participants will learn how to upload FIDE and MCF rating list onto their computer, how to search for names in the list, deleting, changing and adding names, tie break systems used, force pairing and many other interesting features offered by the program. In order to attend the program, participants must have a good understanding of the Swiss Pairing System as this is the basic requirement needed to attend the training program.

For those who attended the MCF Seminar, the fees to attend the optional training program is RM80 but for those who wish to attend only the Swiss Manager Pairing Program, the fees shall be RM 120 per person.

DATMO within 24 hours!!!

With yesterday being the final closing date for the remaining 3 events, the number of participants playing in the Malaysia Chess Festival can now be confirmed as follows:
  1. 8th IGB Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysia Open - 96 players (It was 133 players last year)
  2. AmBank Malaysia Chess Challenge - 36 players (It was 52 players last year)
  3. 2nd KLK Tan Sri Lee Loy Seng International Seniors Open - 24 players (It was 18 players last year)
  4. Merdeka Individual Rapid Chess Tournament - 76 players (It was 107 players last year)
  5. ASTRO Merdeka Open Rapid Team Chess Championship - 79 teams (It was only 70 teams last year)
  6. SWENSEN Age Group Event - 367 players (It was less than 200 last year)
The number of participants have slightly increased for the Seniors Open event but the ASTRO Merdeka event attracted 9 team more this year compared to last year, and for the SWENSEN Age Group event, the number of children playing is almost double of last year's figure with a plane load of young players coming in from Iran to participate in this year's event.
Although some of the events are registering lesser number of participants compared to last year, the organizer is expecting some last minute entries to be received during the player's meeting tomorrow which may increase the numbers slightly but not drastic enough to exceed last year's participation.

Less than 48 hours to go before Round 1 officially starts....
