The Merdeka Chess Festival is Now the Malaysian Chess Festival
Dato' Arthur Tan Chess Centre (DATCC)
DATCC is pleased to confirm an official change to the name of this year's flagship tournament. The event previously announced as the 21st Merdeka Chess Festival 2026 will now be known as the 21st Malaysian Chess Festival 2026.
This name has a special place in our history — the tournament was known as the Malaysian Chess Festival for its first 20 editions, and returning to that name reflects the event's identity as Malaysia's premier, longest-running international open chess festival. The brief use of "Merdeka" in earlier promotional materials was not the intended long-term name, and we thank the community for their understanding as we finalize this transition.
What stays the same:
- Dates: August 28 – September 7, 2026
- Venue: KL Gateway, Kuala Lumpur
- All nine events, schedules, and prize structures remain unchanged
- Existing registrations remain valid — no action is required from players who have already signed up
What's changing:
- The event name across all official platforms, signage, and future publications
- Updated branding on registration pages and the tournament prospectus
We appreciate the patience of players, parents, arbiters, and partners as we update our materials to reflect this change. For the latest details, please visit the official festival website or contact the DATCC organizing committee directly.
We look forward to welcoming players from Malaysia and around the world to the 21st Malaysian Chess Festival 2026.
